InnovaCare Health Leadership

Rick ShintoDr. Richard Shinto is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of InnovaCare, Inc.  Previously, from 2008 until its sale in 2012, he served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Aveta Inc. Prior to that he was a member of the Aveta management team.

In 2017, Dr. Shinto was elected to serve on the board of directors for America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the industry’s largest trade association.

Dr. Shinto has more than 20 years of clinical and operational healthcare experience in managed care.  Prior to being named CEO of Aveta Inc., Dr. Shinto served as Chief Medical Officer of NAMM California.  Before joining NAMM, Dr. Shinto was the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Medical Officer for Medical Pathways Management Company.  After serving as the Corporate Vice President of Medical Management for MedPartners from 1996-1997, he left to become the Chief Medical Officer for Cal Optima Health Plan in Orange County, California.  Dr. Shinto began his medical tenure as an internist and pulmonologist practicing in Southern California.

The author of several articles on healthcare and clinical medicine, Dr. Shinto received his B.S. from the University of California at Irvine, his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an M.B.A. from the University of Redlands.

Douglas Malton currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer of InnovaCare, Inc.  Prior to joining InnovaCare he served Aveta  Inc. in a number of senior management roles from the company’s founding in 2004, most recently as Chief Financial Officer, until its sale in 2012.  Prior to serving  at Aveta, Mr. Malton was a member of the Straus Group where he focused on investing in the healthcare services sector.  Prior to that, he spent more than seven years as an investment banker with Citigroup and Oppenheimer where he concentrated on debt and equity capital markets, and mergers and acquisitions.  He is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and the University of Connecticut.

Chris Joyce is the General Counsel of InnovaCare, Inc.  He was previously the General Counsel of Aveta Inc. He has over 20 years of experience in legal affairs compliance and healthcare administration.

Before joining InnovaCare, Mr. Joyce served as Executive Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions and as General Counsel for Alliance HealthCare Services, a diagnostic imaging and oncology service provider in Newport, California.  Prior to Alliance, Mr. Joyce was the Chief Executive Officer of Medical Resources, Inc., a diagnostic imaging services provider in Bloomfield, N.J.  He has also held several other high level legal affairs and compliance positions in the healthcare industry, and practice law at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP in New York City.   Mr. Joyce received a B.S. in economics from State University of New York at Albany and his J.D. from the University of Chicago.

Penelope Kokkinides is currently the Chief Administrative Officer at InnovaCare, Inc. She rejoined the company in June of 2015. Previously, Kokkinides had served as Chief Operating Officer of InnovaCare, Inc. and Chief Operating Officer of Aveta Inc. as well as Vice President of Clinical Operations. Kokkinides has more than 20 years of health care experience specializing in government programs (Medicare and Medicaid) and the managed care industry. She has extensive knowledge and expertise in developing clinical programs and managing health care processes and operations with a focus on improving efficiencies and organizational infrastructure.

Prior to rejoining InnovaCare, Inc., Kokkinides served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Centerlight HealthCare where she was responsible for overall management and strategic direction of the managed care division, Chief Operating Officer of Touchstone Health and Corporate Vice President for Care Management and Disease Management at AmeriChoice, a business unit of UnitedHealth Group, where she was instrumental in developing and implementing the company’s health model.

Kokkinides holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and classical languages from Binghamton University; master’s degree in social work from New York University and a post-master’s program advanced degree in alcohol and substance abuse, and a master’s degree in public health from Columbia University School of Public Health.

Mike Sortino is the Chief Accounting Officer of InnovaCare, Inc. He was previously the Controller of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. (U.S. Branch). Prior to Samsung, Sortino served for over 5 years as the Chief Financial Officer of HCC Specialty, a managing general agent for Houston Casualty Company. His experience includes more than 20 years in the insurance and reinsurance industries as well as over 5 years in public accounting.

Sortino earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Vermont and he is a Certified Public Accountant.

Jonathan Meyers is the Chief Actuary Officer of InnovaCare, Inc. He has more than 20 years of experience in all facets of Managed Care, including Pricing, Reserving, Contracting and Clinical Risk Analytics.

Before joining InnovaCare, Meyers served as the Director of Actuarial Services, Medicare and Medicaid for Horizon BCBS, the largest carrier in New Jersey. Prior to Horizon, he was the Chief Actuary at HealthCare Partners in New York, a Division of Heritage Medical Systems as both the CFO and VP of Managed Care at various times. HealthCare Partners is a Full Delegated MSO with an IPA that manages risk from Health Plans for all lines of business throughout NY with a focus on Long Island, Westchester and the 5 Boroughs of New York City. He has also provided Employee Benefits Consulting to large Employers and Unions, including SEIU 1199, International Paper, AXA Financial, Johnson & Johnson and Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System), giving insight and strategic advice to Senior Executives on positioning of Healthcare Benefits for employees and retirees.

Meyers is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and an Honors Scholar Graduate of the University of Connecticut.

As Chief Information Officer for InnovaCare, Inc., S Bhasker is responsible for the management of the Business Technology Services for the organization comprising the Information Technology department and Providers Connectivity Unit. Bhasker is an experienced professional in the Information Systems area. His background includes well-known global organizations such as Aetna International, Inc., United Nations Development Programme, Coopers & Lybrand, and American Enterprise Group.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Business Administration from New York University’s Stern School of Business.

Board of Directors

Daniel E. Straus, who serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors, is a principal and CEO of several companies that invest in and operate healthcare service businesses, including those in the long-term care, assisted living, institutional pharmacy, hospice and managed care industries.  Previously, Mr. Straus was the principal stockholder, president and co-CEO of The Multicare Companies, Inc., which was sold in 1997.  Mr. Straus who has a law degree from New York University, practiced law as an associate with the firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York prior to forming Multicare. For more information about Mr. Straus, please visit http://www.danielestraus.org

Joseph Mark is President of HRP Capital Inc. From January 2003 until January 2007 he served as CEO and President of Aveta Inc.  and its predecessor company. Previously, Mr. Mark was co-founder, co-chairman and CEO of THCG, Inc. a publicly-traded merchant banking company with holdings in technology and health care companies. Prior to this, Mr. Mark was President of Tower Hill Securities, Inc., the successor to Hambro America Securities, Inc., the US investment banking subsidiary of Hambros PLC. Hambros was a UK based merchant banking firm. Mr. Mark joined Hambros Bank in 1989 and served as head of its US corporate finance business. He was also active in its venture capital activities. Prior to joining Hambros, Mr. Mark was an investment banker at a number of firms, including Salomon Brothers and Drexel Burnham Lambert. Mr. Mark received an AB degree from Columbia University and an MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Steve Baker is President and CEO of Quality Care Management LLC, which operates and manages nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation facilities in central New Jersey. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Meridian Quality Care. From 1992-1996, Mr. Baker held various leadership positions with The Multicare Companies, including Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to that, he was a partner at KPMG Peat Marwick.

Mr. Baker earned his bachelor’s degree from the Monmouth University School of Business. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and New Jersey Society of CPAs.

In August 2000, Jonathan Kolatch founded Redwood Capital Management, LLC, an investment management company specializing in high-yield securities, distressed debt, and special situations, and continues to serve as a Principal. Prior to founding Redwood, Mr. Kolatch was a Partner in the Fixed Income Department of Goldman Sachs. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1982 and held various positions in the Credit Arbitrage Group, the High Yield Group and the Corporate Finance Department. Mr. Kolatch graduated summa cum laude from the Columbia College and received an M.B.A from Harvard Business School.

Dr. Stuart Altman has been a Professor of National Health Policy at the Florence Heller Graduate School for Social Policy, Brandeis University, since 1977 and served as Dean from 1977 to 1993 and from 2006 to 2008.

Dr. Altman served as interim President of Brandeis University from 1990-1991. From 1984 to 1996, he served as Chairman of the Congressional Prospective Payment Assessment Commission responsible for advising Congress and the Administration on Medicare payment policies for healthcare providers and was a member of the federal Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare from 1998-2001.

Dr. Altman is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation/Health at Health, Education and Welfare under President Nixon. Dr. Altman has a B.B.A. from The City College of New York and received his Ph.D in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Altman also serves as a director of the following public companies: Lincare Holdings Inc., a provider of specialty healthcare services, XL Health, a Special Needs Medicare Advantage Plan and Inspiris, a manager of frail elderly Medicare patients. He is also on the Board of two – nonprofit organizations, Emblem Health, a New York based health insurance company, and Tufts Medical Center, a teaching hospital in Boston.

David Roberts is a Senior Managing Director of Angelo, Gordon and a member of the firm’s executive committee. He joined Angelo, Gordon in 1993. Mr. Roberts manages the firm’s private equity and special situations area and was the founder of the firm’s opportunistic real estate area.

Mr. Roberts has invested in a wide variety of companies and special situations, including companies in the business services, healthcare services and financial services industries. Previously, he was a principal at Gordon Investment Corporation, a Canadian merchant bank, where he participated in a wide variety of principal transactions. Prior to that he worked in the Corporate Finance Department at L.F. Rothschild where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Roberts has a B.S. degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Raphael Benaroya is the Managing Director of Biltmore Capital Group, LLC, a financial investment firm and American Licensing Group, L.P., which specializes in brand-name licensing for consumer goods.

He is also Chairman of Kid Brands (NYSE), a group of companies in the infant and juvenile products industry. As the founder of United Retail Group, Inc. (NASDAQ), Mr. Benaroya led a leveraged buyout to acquire the company from Limited Brands, where he served as CEO of two of the company’s divisions. Following that transaction, Mr. Benaroya led United Retail Group through a successful IPO and secondary offering. The company was later acquired by a French conglomerate.

Mr. Benaroya serves on several civic and humanitarian boards worldwide and has received numerous awards for his efforts. He was an advisor to the Secretary of Defense on the Defense Reform Initiatives; led delegations on National Security matters to Israel and India and visited Iraq & Afghanistan on several occasions with U.S. forces. He also mentored in the “Conference of Ethics in America” at the United States Military Academy at West Point, lectured at the Naval Post Graduate School and participated in National Security Strategy Exercise at the National Defense University.

Mr. Benaroya received a Certificate of Distinction and was awarded a medal decoration by the U.S. Department of Defense. He is a recipient of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award and a U.S. Congressional Certificate of Recognition.

Mr. Benaroya earned a Bachelor of Science with distinction and an MBA from the University of Minnesota. He also attended executive education programs at Harvard Business School.
