More than 450,000 plan members and 2,000 InnovaCare employees were impacted by this deadly storm. When these people needed help, InnovaCare answered their call. And we’ve been on the ground helping ever since.
We named the campaign Caminamos Juntos – “We Walk Together” – because we want all who were affected by this devastation to know they are not alone.
In the wake of the hurricane, InnovaCare/MMM partnered with Bacardi Limited, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, to deploy caravans bringing water, food and medical services to 30 towns across Puerto Rico, reaching thousands of people affected by the hurricane. Through our chronic care clinic, Vita Care, we set up free clinical tents among the rubble with medical professionals providing the immediate medical support needed while also working to follow up and ensure residents’ overall well-being and safety. In total, we have impacted more than 200,000 residents and treated thousands of patients, regardless of their insurance status.
Within a month of the Hurricane Maria’s landfall, our organization raised more than $4 million through the Gwendolyn and Joseph Straus Charitable Fund for Puerto Rico Relief. Our gratitude extends to a vast range of our stakeholders, such as the physicians within the MMM network on the island donated more than $XX to help their friends and neighbors. Daniel E. Straus, chairman of the InnovaCare Board of Directors, hosted the “Starry Night Masquerade” fundraiser in New York City, drawing nearly 1,000 attendees, including NFL players, recording artists and actresses.
Within just the first three weeks, our team delivered more than 40,000 lbs. of medical supplies via chartered planes to the island. On return flights, these planes were used to evacuate the critically ill and their families, so they could receive the treatment they needed. InnovaCare/MMM employees contributed more than 8,000 hours of volunteer time to serving those in need.
In total, we have reached thousands of Puerto Ricans with humanitarian aid – from meals and water to entertainment and fellowship for adults and children. All the while we have continued to offer medical services such as primary care consultations, diabetic testing and supplies, prescription refills and mental health and social work services.
